Race to Sustainability: FIA Is Requiring New F1 Teams to Be Net-Zero Carbon Emitters by 2030

The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) began accepting applications for new Formula 1 teams on Thursday. This is a first for F1, as the international governing body of motorsport will evaluate applicants’ environmental and societal impact, in addition to their financial and technical ability to run a racing team. Although the criteria have been expanded, the final decision on which teams will join the world championship will be made by the FIA, Formula One Management, and existing F1 teams.

Teams selected will be eligible to join Formula 1 starting from the 2025 season at the earliest. The championship has a goal of being carbon neutral by 2030 and applicants will need to submit a plan demonstrating how they will achieve this target. In addition, prospective teams will have to demonstrate how their involvement will have a positive impact on society, focusing on promoting equality, diversity, and inclusivity.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said:

“The growth and appeal of the FIA Formula One World Championship is at unprecedented levels. The FIA believes the conditions are right for interested parties, which meet the selection criteria, to express a formal interest in entering the Championship.”

“For the first time ever, as part of the selection conditions, we are requesting that candidates set out how they would meet the FIA’s sustainability benchmarks and how they would make a positive societal impact through sport.”

“The process is a logical extension of the positive acceptance of the FIA’s 2026 F1 Power Unit Regulations from engine manufacturers which has attracted Audi to Formula 1 and created interest among other potential entrants.”

FIA President informed Motorsport.com in Jan that Andretti Global was the only team showing interest in F1. Despite facing opposition from current F1 teams, the American team’s entry still awaits approval. Other organizations have until April 30th, 2023 to apply, with FIA set to announce new team decisions by June 30th, 2023.
